Grandmother given jail time for infant’s death

A grandmother who accidentally smothered her infant grandson has been spared a lengthy prison sentence and will instead serve 45 days in jail and 10 years probation.

Tina Louise Miller-Steiner insisted her pain and suffering for causing her grandson’s death was punishment enough.

The Lakeville woman pleaded guilty in Dakota County to second-degree manslaughter in the death of 6-week-old Evan Berney. Judge Timothy Wermager on Monday also ordered the 46-year-old grandmother to pay for the child’s funeral.

Miller-Steiner told police she drank two martinis and some wine against her doctor’s advice while caring for the baby last May. She says she put the baby down for a nap and laid down beside him, smothering him in her sleep.
