This week we’re discussing Healthy Feet, with Dr. Mark Zelent, podiatrist for North Memorial Clinics
The appeal of the high heel has withstood the test of time. This peculiarity has been discovered in the tombs of ancient Egypt dating back to 1000 B.C. In medieval times, women wore stiletto heels to indicate class -- but they at least had the sense to use elegant canes to prevent injuries and falls.
In modern times we know better. Wearing heels higher than two inches could leave you without a healthy leg to stand on. In as little as 4 or 5 hours, there can be damage to joints, tendons, ligaments, skin and nerves. If worn regularly for months or years, permanent damage can occur to the toes, ball of the foot and achilles tendon. On occasions when only a heel will do, lessen your chance of injury by wearing shoes with a wider toe box and a stable heel.
