This week we’re discussing Breast Cancer with Judy Witbeck, Mammography Technologist with North Memorial.

Women possess a strong weapon in the fight against breast cancer -- early detection.

Detected early, breast cancer is more likely to be treated successfully, increasing the chance for a cure. The death rate from breast cancer has been dropping steadily in recent years because of improved detection and treatment. But to continue this downward trend, it’s important for women to be vigilant in prevention tactics.

At age 20, women should begin monthly self breast exams. Clinical breast exams by a health care provider should be performed on a yearly basis for women over age 20. Annual screening mammography should start at 40. Talk with your doctor about your risk and an appropriate screening schedule for you. Your doctor may recommend a mammogram at an earlier age if you are at greater risk. Remember, you can do something about breast cancer.
