Get to Know Ken
5 Eyewitness News welcomed Emmy Award winning meteorologist Ken Barlow back to Minnesota television in June 2011. Ken brings more than 30 years of weather forecasting experience, including 25 years in Minnesota, to the station. Ken has earned the AMS Seal of Approval and is an AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist. He is also a member of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science). In February 2020, he earned the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation, a professional recognition of the quality of his weather broadcasts. Among radio and television meteorologists, the CBM designation is considered a mark of distinction and recognition.
“How did you get interested in meteorology?”
I saw a tree blow down when I was 7 years old and I started reading books about weather. I always knew I would be a weatherman on TV. I had a “studio” in my bedroom where I would pretend I was on TV using an empty milk carton, with an empty toilet paper roll, set up on my dresser as my camera. And I had a big folding map that I made to hang on my wall.
“What’s the hardest part about your job?”
The hardest part about the job is getting it right. I know a lot of people depend on what I forecast.
“What does ‘Minnesota’s Weather Authority’ mean to you?”
It means we are always here watching the weather for you…good or bad. We will not let you down and you can always count on us to be here with all the latest – morning, noon, and all night long if necessary.
“What is your favorite season and why?”
I love spring because everything is coming back to life and we can all get to know our neighbors again after hibernating all winter.
“If you weren’t a meteorologist, what would you be?”
I wanted to be a senator. I was named after John F. Kennedy and my full name is Kenneth John Barlow.
Top 10 with Ken
Music: Eclectic … Neil Diamond, Motown, Eminem, Bruce Springsteen, The Weekend
Movie: Airplane! Funniest movie ever
TV Show: Schitt’s Creek was fantastic
Book: Science journals and magazines
Food: Spaghetti & meat sauce
Restaurant: Clive’s Roadhouse Burgers in Rogers is excellent
Sports Team: New England Patriots. I’m from Rhode Island and my dad signed with the Patriots back in 1960 so it’s in my genes!
Vacation Spot: Miami or anywhere there is a beach!
Holiday: Christmas – family is everything (when we get together again!)
